Do you remember your first tattoo? I remember I spent 3 years researching what my first tattoo would be. I knew I had to mark my 21st birthday with a first tattoo that was symbolic of who I am: unique and meaningful. So when I came across this intricate Buddhist design, I knew it was my calling for my first tattoo as well as the perfect logo for my blog.
This buddhist tattoo is known as an Unalome, it is a symbol that is a representation of reaching enlightenment, it represents a path that each person takes throughout their life. The road can be straight and narrow or fluctuating vigorously, filled with happiness and love, or anxiety and fear.
The path begins at the centre of the spiral (where we are folded and trapped in our own weakness and uncertainty). As you continue down this path, you are wandering and becoming more conscious of your surroundings. As the path unfolds, the mind finds clarity and you are slowly freed from the cycles of suffering. When you reach the symbolic straight line at the top: you have reached enlightenment.
The first question I get from people who I show my unalome to is, ‘So where are you on this path?’ Truth is I am unsure. I think this young of an age comes with some extension of uncertainty, naturally. I have not travelled enough nor experienced enough to be at the end of my life path in order to reach the optimum dot at the top, where I can endeavour the almighty enlightenment.
But by having this symbol etched in the skin of my inner right wrist; it serves as a constant reminder of the incredible journey called life and the path to my purpose.
A big thank you to Johnathan Williams for the photoshoot, what a talented photographer & illustrator as well as a humble person to work with. Check out his incredible work below and contact directly for any inquiries:
