positive affirmations

December 16, 2018

Do you believe in the power of positive thinking? Positive thinking, powerful thinking, law of attraction or positive affirmations… all of these inevitably stem from the same root. Susan Jeffers in ‘Feel the Fear And Do It Anyway’ defines an ‘affirmation’ as self talk in its highest form. An affirmation is a ‘positive statement that is already happening.’

For example:

‘I am having a wonderful day’

‘I love and accept myself’

Now the secret to maintaining positive affirmations and their results is merely repetition. Think of the brain like a muscle. To make that muscle strong you must consistently train it in the gym everyday prior to gaining any result. Which is why it is highly suggested that you compile a list of positive affirmations, write these statements and keep them around your room within eyesight to constantly remind yourself into positive thinking. Any time you feel like your mind is running away on its usual condescending chatterbox, your eye will scan around your room and viola land on this card on the wall. It will serve as a reminder to yourself to change your thought processes and mood. I myself have implemented doing this very task, writing my favourite positive affirmations on placards and placing them around my room. You see it is all about creating that optimistic environment that will subconsciously affect your thoughts and your moods. I now wake up to delightful words like ‘you are magic‘ and ‘say yes to the universe’ to start my day energised, lift my morning mood and remind me to seize every opportunity for the day.

Your mind is a powerful wondrous tool – what you feed, is what will feed you

This is so important. This concept revolves around the similar vein of if you fester a negative mental environment then you will grow nothing but a pessimestic mentality. Consequently, this will leak into powerless thinking and inefficient behaviour. Repeating victimised negative statements like the following may signal a red flag:

‘Why do bad things always happen to me?’

‘I can’t lose weight, I am never going to have a perfect body’

‘I am hard to love, who is ever going to want me?’

‘I’m never going to find my dream job’

And on it goes. Don’t you realise you are preparing yourself for failure with all this powerless thinking? Why fester in this ruminating loophole? Instead of focussing on what is bad in your life, why not cut yourself some slack and use productive thinking that will enable you to move forward?

Convert your thinking:

‘I’m never going to find my dream job’ —> ‘I am finding the perfect job for me’

‘I can’t lose weight, I am never going to have a perfect body’ —> ‘I am in the process of creating a healthy radiant body’

‘Why do bad things always happen to me?’ —> ‘I am willing to discover and experience the highest possibility of good in my life’

It may sound pedantic but surrounding yourself with constant positivity around your home place would help integrate positive thinking into your lifestyle. Repetition is crucial to learning; the more you are exposed to the information, the more your brain cells are able to communicate. Performing an action, will initiate the neutrons to start firing electrical signals (action potentials) and form an active network of cells. Practising this action repetitively will lead to faster and more efficient processing of the cell signals…hence better performance (Source: Medium). Science has shown us how crucial repetition is to the human brain, so surely exercising the muscle of positive thinking should be a mandatory investment for your own mental wellbeing. Before you know it, using positive affirmations will be like second nature – like blinking your eyes. You will not need to question it, you will not need to think of doing it and you may even find yourself in disbelief of the absurdity for ever thinking any different!

If I have not convinced you, then let Antony Robbins do his magic:
