SNE HNE by Isaac B is certainly a hypnotic song, the acronym is short for ‘See no evil, hear no evil’. The music video is equally as immersive – the track starts off echoey and reminiscent of someone howling from a distant. Being set on a rooftop building balcony outside in the dark night, the dim and dubious location utilises pathetic fallacy. It highlights the isolated and eery theme of the track and overall the music video fits the song perfectly.
The first thing I noticed was how good the visuals were. The flickering motion freezing each scene throughout emphasises the hypnotic theme of the track and highlights that movement seems to be a strong factor in the video – particularly the idea of running. The plot is revolved around a gang member running to catch Isaac and Isaac is running away from him.
It’s ironic how the video incorporated purple neon lights swiftly and subtly flashing against the background and against Isaac’s skin – very fitting to isaacB’s alias known as ‘Purple heart’.
Interestingly Isaac utilises 2 bandanas in the video when hiding behind a wall from the gang member who was chasing him – his mouth is covered by the former bandana and then he ties on the secondary bandana over his eyes so now both his eyes and mouth are covered – this conjured up the infamous ‘SNE HNE’ figure where there are three animals, one is covering their eyes, one is covering their mouth and the final is covering their ears. The idea of covering your eyes depicts un-seeing what one has just seen (perhaps because it is too emotional to watch). Whereas covering your ears likens to the idea of blocking the noise out and finally covering the mouth instigates disabling oneself from being a snitch – very fitting and apt.
The icing on the cake has to be when Isaac puts a pair of bright yellow earphones in his ear, depicting the ‘hear no evil.’ It is such a common thing to do to put your earphones in to ‘block out the world’ but in this context it is to ‘hear no evil’. The neon yellow colour stands out in the dark, perhaps highlighting how it is his savior?
It is quite a dark thing to do, to keep a secret or not tell the truth when you know what the reality really is – the ultimate definition of unjust.
The dark surrounding in the night and Isaac being captivated in hiding renders pathetic fallacy well and we can conclude the music video fits the song perfectly.
